8 Tips to Boost Motivation at Work

Hispanics take pride in their work ethic defined by hard work, dedication, and being reliable. Nothing has been given to us, but fortunately we do not use that as an excuse to give less than 100% at work!

Unfortunately, such commitment can take a toll, leaving us emotionally and physically spent.


We all have those days, so don't beat yourself up about it. Just be a Wise Latina to jump start motivation and productivity.

Gianina's 8 Wise Latina Tips to Boost Motivation at Work

  1. Break Up Your Day: You may think that you take a break when you check your personal email. Not so. A break means leaving your desk--that's the only way the brain can interpret a change from working. In fact, the brain needs a break about every 120 minutes or 2 hours.
  2. Prioritize: Make a To-Do list accompanied with a check list of responsibilities that you update in the morning, mid-day, and at the end of your shift. By the minute, things come up and current projects may have to take a back seat for urgent issues.
  3. Do Not Multi-Task, Schedule: Yes, you read right! Multi-tasking creates a scattered mindset and the inability to completely focus on a project. Learn to focus on one, get it done, and then move on to the next one. It's not procrastinating. It's smart scheduling with an emphasis on time management!
  4. Siesta (Nap): In Latin America and Spain, lunch breaks can be 2-3 hours which includes the siesta. Not so here in the U.S. But studies show that taking a quick nap during lunch can provide you with the rest you need to recharge and finish your assignments by the end of your work day.
  5. Prepare a Strategy for Interruptions: When co-workers unexpectedly come to your desk, inform them to set a time via email later in the day to further talk about a project. This gives you the chance to put it on your To-Do list, prioritize, and not fall into making promises you may not be able to follow-through on. However, if it's your boss, stop what you're doing, grab a pen and paper, and start taking notes!
  6. Earlier Work Shift: If you can, opt for an earlier work schedule. Less people at the office means less distractions, and more focus to get the job done. Think about it!
  7. Laugh: It's as easy as that! When we laugh, we send endorphins to the brain that lift our mood. Put in your ear buds and watch a funny YouTube video or sing along to a favorite jam. Make a quick call to a girlfriend to reminisce about a good times!
  8. Day-Dream: We easily get caught up in day-to-day activities and forget what we're working for. Focus on your career, family, and personal goals. Envision yourself living your dreams!

Remember as a Wise Latina, you should always engage in proactive not reactive activities. We can rise above anything, including adversity, lack of opportunity, and low expectations.
