Fitness: 4 Reasons to Add Friends to Your Exercise Routine

What lifeline do I turn to when I lack motivation to hit the gym? Phone a friend.

Exercising with amigos can pump up your fitness routine and your relationships.

4 Reasons to Work Out with Friends

  1. Stay committed to your exercise plan: It is harder to skip a workout when someone is waiting for you. Chicas, it's like any date--something to look forward to!
  2. Work out harder: When you enjoy an activity, you will keep it up for longer, as will your bestie's words of encouragement. Burn more calories together by pushing each other to finish just one more lap or 10 more push-ups.
  3. Feel better: Did you know that exercising with others produces more feel-good endorphins than completing the same workout solo? Read more here.
  4. Strengthen your relationships: Shared experiences keep you close. Not only will you have fun in the moment, but you can laugh about your crazy spinning instructor for months to come!

Workout buddies have always been key to my fitness routine. Growing up, I looked forward to the evening dog walk as a time for my mami, sister, and I to chat and catch up. Only later did I realize that this together-time doubled as physical activity.

Now, distance running with my hubby keeps us close, while motivating me to stay in shape. I look forward to archery with my good friend and comadre because as we train, we share the latest on our jobs and dreams, leaving me physically and emotionally refreshed.

I'd love to set up a fitness date with a pal! What should we do?

Your possibilities are endless. Try some of these activities:

  • Meet up for a walk, jog, or bike ride and explore.
  • Find or make your own circuit to strength train together and take turns being the drill sergeant.
  • Try a new gym class you would be intimidated to do alone. I'm trying to talk a pal into joining me for a pole dancing class!
  • The more the merrier: how about an organized group sport? Tennis, kickball, volleyball, basketball, the list goes on.
  • Get adventurous. Enjoy the great outdoors through a hike, climb, kayaking, or rafting trip.

Friends can encourage each other to stay healthy by, together, making fitness a priority. Instead of catching up over a latte this weekend, save the calories and schedule a workout to keep your bodies as strong as your bond.
