Fitness: 4 Ways to Spin Your (Bike) Wheels

I want to get outside and stay active now that the days are longer and warmer. Biking is a great way to do both.

This weekend I skipped the bus and used a bicycle to run errands around town. 45 minutes later, mandados were done, I had seen new corners of my neighborhood, and I had fit in a workout. Now that's healthy multi-tasking!


I plan on making cycling a regular part of my routine.

An aerobic exercise that gives your heart and lungs a workout, pedaling helps reduce your risk of heart disease while burning calories to help you maintain a healthy weight. Like all exercise, biking will boost your immune system and lift your mood and energy levels.

4 Ways to Spin Your (Bike) Wheels

  1. Take it outside: Channel your inner-child, jump on the bicicleta, and go explore. Many cities have designated bike lanes or scenic  trails perfect for an afternoon ride. Competitive? Consider training for a road race or triathlon.
  2. Commute: No time for a leisurely ride? In 2 Ways to Keep PE on Your Schedule I recommend making your trip to work a workout. About half of American workers live within 5 miles of their trabajo--that's only a 20-minute ride each way. ¡Fácil, and better than sitting in traffic any day!
  3. Cycle at the gym. Great for off-season training, stationary bikes allow you to increase intensity, building the perfect workout for you. I love spinning classes: the upbeat music and encouragement of the instructor and classmates push me to work harder than I would alone. No classes at your location? Create your own by jumping on the stationary bike and pedaling to the tempo of a playlist alternating fast and moderately paced songs. Remember to drink water before and during all exercise.
  4. No matter what you do, always be safe: wear a helmet, brush up on bike repair basics, keep required tools on hand, never listen to music or use any electronics while riding outdoors, and take extra precautions in traffic.
